Kunstenares Monique Besten verlijft drie maanden op het terrein van de voormalige zuivelfabriek bij Stichting KiK (Kunst in Kolderveen). Ze heeft er nu twee maanden opzitten. Onderdeel van haar werkperiode is een project waarvoor ze drie Amerikaanse kunstenaars vroeg om naar Nederland te komen. Samen lieten zij zich voor hun werk inspireren door het Drentse platteland en haar bewoners. Deze Amerikaanse periode van drie weken werd zondag afgesloten met een expositie een muziek- en kunstprogramma in de Kaashal. Een dichter, muzikant, vogelgeluidendeskundige en beeldend kunstenaars lieten zich van hun beste kant zien.
De Amsterdamse Monique Besten zag de afgelopen periode bijzondere contacten tot stand komen tussen haar Amerikaanse collega‘s en de omgeving. ‘Dit is een plattelandsgemeente. De mensen zijn niet zo geïnteresseerd in kunst, maar wel nieuwsgierig. We hebben flyers uitgedeeld in de buurt en werden zomaar uitgenodigd op de koffie. Op een boekenmarkt nodigde een organist ons uit. We hebben zoveel mogelijk van de omgeving proberen op te zuigen,‘ aldus Monique.
Zo ging Mary Rothlisberger als een vogel in de landerijen op pad om takken bijeen te sprokkelen voor haar eigen nest, kreeg Christian French van bewoners spullen mee om zijn eigen stillevens van te maken en stond er voor Jason Ferguson een koe klaar als inspiratie voor nieuw werk.
Haar verblijf in Kolderveen bevalt Monique Besten prima. ‘Ik word hier steeds blijer van. Ik vind het leuk om op een andere locatie te werken. Je ziet nieuwe dingen. Als je thuis de deur uitstapt, is de situatie ook elke dag weer anders, maar hier is het contrast groter. De Amerikanen maken dat contrast nog groter. Net als ik kijken zij graag op ander plekken.
